The Coubre forest by bike: cycle paths and family tips

Between Arvert and the ocean lie five thousand hectares of maritime pine: the Coubre state forest. What makes it especially suited to families is its network of dedicated cycle paths — fully separated from the road — linking the village to the beaches without ever making children cross a street.

Why it's different here

Plenty of destinations advertise their cycle paths; few offer a complete, shaded route where an eight-year-old can pedal alone all the way to the beach. The Coubre forest delivers that on several waymarked routes, with regular rest stops and clear signage.

Which routes

The main paths connect the peninsula's villages (Arvert, Les Mathes, La Palmyre) to the various Côte Sauvage access points, as well as the Coubre lighthouse, a landmark visible from far away. Allow around twenty minutes by bike from Arvert to reach the first beach access — a pace that's easily manageable for children from about 7-8 years old, with a few breaks.

What you'll see along the way

Maritime pines, of course, but also wooded dune areas, the odd forester's hut, and in places open views over the Gironde estuary or the ocean. The forest also acts as a natural windbreak on days when the Atlantic wind picks up.

Good to know

In peak summer, set off early in the morning or late afternoon: the paths are shaded but the heat still builds during the hottest hours. Bring water — there are few refill points in the forest, even though the villages at either end are well equipped.
